Monash University MalaysiaThe symptom of poor weight gains that leads to significant diagnosis of failure to thrive in breastfed infants, always being the reason to stop breastfeeding or supplement with formula milk. Commonly, health professional advice mothers to stop breastfeeding and deliver the information to them that her milk has inadequate calories. Furthermore, the mother will be suggested certain formula milk to improve baby’s weight that significantly undermine the supremacy of breast milk.

This presentation mainly to highlights some possible causes of failure to thrive in fully breastfed infants. The causes divided into medical causes and nutritional causes that include breastfeeding problems.

The management of failure to thrive will emphasize on how to improve weight gain with continuation of exclusive/fully breastfeeding after the root cause being determined by history taking, breastfeeding observation and examination.
