For instance, breast milk provides the right balance of nutrients to help an infant grow into a strong and healthy toddler. It has been shown to be immunologically, emotionally and nutritionally advantageous. Their effect on general physical growth has been well established, however less attention has been paid to its association with the craniofacial growth and dental development.
Recently, there is an increasing evidence to suggest that breastfeeding contributes an important influence on the thrust and growth of the mandible. Breastfeeding places beneficial orthopedic forces on the jaws where these forces impact the maxilla and the mandible during a very rapid period of infant jaw growth. This presentation attempts to cover the effects of breast-feeding and bottle-feeding on three-dimensional craniofacial growth, infant swallowing, airway, oral cavity and dentoalveolar development based on the available literature.
